Fascinating. I recently learned that clean creek water can be made drinkable with an RO system. The under sink variety is affordable! I intend to move to the 'edge of the grid' instead of 'off grid' and rather than digging a well, I'll be getting some of those 275g water jugs. A solar powered pump would hopefully be enough to fill it. I'm not worried about it being speedy. Then let an under-sink RO system handle making it potable. Technology is amazing.

This may actually be a good case for mechanical spinning power storage. Flywheel capacitors that can help regulate the power grid. They can be relatively cheap and can help buffer these issues out on a wind/solar farm. You could also connect them in series to stabilize things.

People living less than half a mile have had material residuals in their houses that were not tested (there was one test for something that wasn't an issue), and houses and businesses are being abandoned. Wildlife has died at higher rates, the creek water has a rainbow, and people are showing higher incidences of illness. NS AFAIK has done nothing for the townspeople except oh, they set up a new city park!

Why don't they paint the rails silver or something similar to reflect some of the solar gain? Seems like a cheap way to get lower stress range, we did that with long piping runs.

What Hawaii could do to improve reliability is to have generators on barges that can be moved from one island to the next as needed. Most of Hawaii electricity comes from solar. The roof top solar makes more power than the state can use on normal days. That is why they have been some of the first who have invested in battery storage. They had battery storage thirty years ago.
